Welcome to the DiskTop 4.5.2 Updaters Read Me file.

Who Needs To Use This Update?
Not everyone needs to update from 4.5 or 4.5.1 to version 4.5.2. Updating is not difficult, but a number of steps are required. If you decide to update to 4.5.2 (after reading the list of problems this update covers) we STRONGLY recommend that you print this Read Me file and have the instructions at hand while you update.
As you probably know, DiskTop is a desk accessory. (We kept it that way to provide DiskTop's power -- and brighter smiles -- to both System 6 and System 7 users.) System 6 and System 7 handle desk accessories in different ways. We had to design the 4.5.2 update process to handle DiskTop on both systems. It was not easy. Gil says it was like trying to dry-shave a bobcat. Therefore, this update process will be different from any you have used in the past.
The DiskTop 4.5.2 updater fixes the following problem in DiskTop 4.5 and 4.5.1:
- If you are using DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 and System 7.5, then DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 would "crash" when you try to run it, leaving a thin strip of window containing the column heading buttons. This crash has been traced to a problem in the new "Apple Menu Options" control panel in System 7.5. It is NOT a bug in DiskTop itself. The new Apple Menu Options control panel in System 7.5 provides the hierarchical Apple menu items and the "Recent" items on the Apple menu (the control panel is not required for normal system operation - it just provides a few "convenience" features). Apple is aware of this problem, but rather than make you wait for their fix to the Apple Menu Options control panel, we created DiskTop 4.5.2, which provides a safe "work around" for Apple's problem. You can use DiskTop 4.5.2 and the System 7.5 Apple Menu Options control panel together with no crashes. DiskTop 4.5.2 also works just fine with the previously supported versions of System 6 and System 7.
The DiskTop 4.5.2 Updater also includes all the fixes provided by DiskTop 4.5.1. DiskTop 4.5.1 fixed these problems in DiskTop 4.5:
- System 7 Pro / PowerTalk users discovered that a new "disk" entitled Mail Enclosures now appears in the Find Criteria dialog box. Attempting to search this volume caused the Macintosh to crash. This problem has been fixed.
- People printing the contents of the DiskTop window discovered that strange characters appeared where the column headings should be or that the computer would crash. This problem has been fixed.
- If users added a type or creator to the bottom of the pop-up menus of types and creators found in the Find Criteria dialog box, the new type or creator was placed at the top of the menu instead of at the bottom or that odd characters would appear. This problem has been fixed.
- People using Adobe Type Manager on Macintosh computers that use the 68000 processor (Plus, SE, Classic, Portable, PowerBook 100) discovered that clicking the "Find" button or selecting "Path..." from the DiskTop menu would cause the computer to crash. This problem has been fixed.
- People who had previously renamed CEToolbox to something that would place it later in the alphabet (so it would load later in the startup process) discovered that the Installer did not correctly install CEToolbox when DiskTop 4.5 was installed. This problem has been fixed in the DiskTop Installer.

Synopsis of the Update Process
To update, you will copy your DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 diskette to the hard disk, update the copies of the DiskTop desk accessory and the DiskTop Installer, then copy the (now updated) DiskTop files to a new diskette and install DiskTop 4.5.2 from the new diskette.

Creating the DiskTop 4.5.2 Disk
We suggest that you turn off or disable any anti-viral software before beginning with step 1 below. To do this, System 7 users can simply restart the Macintosh and hold down the Shift key as it starts. (This disables all INITs and extensions.) System 6 users should consult the documentation for their antiviral program to learn how to temporarily disable it, or use an INIT manager to disable their INITs.
1) Find the DiskTop disk that came in your DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 package. Two diskettes came in the package -- use the DiskTop diskette, not the GOfer manual diskette. Insert the diskette, drag its icon onto the root level of your hard disk. This will copy the diskette and place its contents in a folder named "DiskTop" on your hard disk. (If you use System 7.x, the DiskTop folder will show the same custom icon as the DiskTop diskette. System 6.x users will see a folder instead of the custom icon.) Unmount the diskette, but keep it handy. Later we will need the serial number found on the back of the diskette.
2) Open the DiskTop 4.5.2 Updaters folder (which you previously expanded from "DiskTop 4.5.1 Updaters.sea" if you are reading this file) and drag the icons for both DiskTop 4.5.2 Updater and DiskTop Install 4.5.2 Updater into the DiskTop folder (created in step 1). You may also wish to drag the "Read Me (DiskTop 4.5.2)" document into the DiskTop folder -- if you do so, you should also drag the "Read Me (DiskTop 4.5)" or "Read Me (DiskTop 4.5.1)" file that is already in the DiskTop folder to the Trash.
3) Open the DiskTop folder and double-click the DiskTop 4.5.2 Updater icon. The Updater dialog box will open with "DiskTop" (located in the Installer Resources folder) selected. Click "Update."
Note: The Updater looks for files associated with DiskTop version 4.5 or 4.5.1 If the Update dialog box opens with any other file or folder selected, ensure that:
a) the Updater is placed in the DiskTop folder created in step 1 above, and
b) the DiskTop files in this folder are version 4.5 or 4.5.1, not newer or older versions.
4) After a few moments, a dialog box will state that the update was completed successfully and the version 4.5 or 4.5.1 DiskTop file has been deleted. (This means the DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 file in the DiskTop folder was replaced by the DiskTop 4.5.2 file.) Click "OK."
5) Double-click the DiskTop Install 4.5.2 Updater icon. The updater dialog box will open with the DiskTop Install file (located in the DiskTop folder) selected. Click the "Update" button.
6) A dialog box will state that the update was completed successfully and the DiskTop Install file has been deleted. Click "OK."
7) Drag both update icons (DiskTop 4.5.2 Updater and DiskTop Install 4.5.2 Updater) from the DiskTop folder to the Trash.
8) Insert and format a new, blank diskette (or erase all contents of a diskette you no longer need using the "Erase Disk..." command in the Special menu of the Finder). The name given to the blank diskette is not important at the moment. We will rename it to "DiskTop" later.
9) Open the DiskTop folder on your hard disk (if it is not already open) and click within the folder window to ensure that it is the active window. Press Command-A to select all the items in the DiskTop folder. Drag the items onto the icon for the blank diskette.
Note: You may be tempted to simply drag the folder to the blank diskette. Do not do this. The items you move to the blank diskette need to be at the root level of the disk. If you mistakenly drag the entire folder (not just the contents), the installer script will not be able to locate the items it needs.
10) Correctly name the new diskette. It must be named "DiskTop" with no spaces before or after the name or anywhere within the name. The "D" and "T" must be upper case with all other letters lower case.
Tip: You can close the DiskTop folder and select its name, copy the name to the Clipboard, select the diskette's name and paste the correct name from the Clipboard.
11) Finally, eject the diskette and place a label on it. Mark the label "DiskTop 4.5.2" and write your serial number on it. (you can find the serial number on your original DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 diskette)
Now you have a new master diskette for DiskTop 4.5.2.

Installing DiskTop 4.5.2
We suggest that you turn off or disable any anti-viral software before installing DiskTop 4.5.2. To do this, System 7 users can simply restart the Macintosh and hold down the Shift key as it starts. (This disables all INITs and extensions.) System 6 users should consult the documentation for their antiviral program to learn how to temporarily disable it, or use an INIT manager to disable their INITs.
Your DiskTop manual (from your DiskTop package) describes how to install DiskTop. Follow the instructions given there, but use your new DiskTop 4.5.2 diskette.
Restart your computer after installing 4.5.2. Open DiskTop and personalize it. Use the serial number that came on your DiskTop 4.5. or 4.5.1 diskette.
After you have successfully installed DiskTop 4.5.2, you may drag the DiskTop folder (created in step 1 above) from your hard disk to the Trash and empty the trash.
Note: If you prefer to use DiskTop to delete this folder, make sure you are deleting the DiskTop folder at the root level of the hard drive. Also, be sure it is the "DiskTop" folder, not the "Desktop Folder."

When You Are Finished...
Store your DiskTop 4.5 or 4.5.1 diskette and your DiskTop 4.5.2 diskette in a safe place. It's important that you keep your original 4.5 or 4.5.1 diskette as well as your 4.5.2 diskette - do not reuse or throw away your 4.5 or 4.5.1 diskette.
